The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the
VCU Center for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering (CERSE)
invites applications for the position of Health and
Function Research Scientist. This position will be housed
in CERSE, a comprehensive, transdisciplinary, VCU-approved Center
of Excellence that serves the needs of people with disabilities
through innovation, collaboration, and resource development in the
broad field of rehabilitation science including rehabilitation
medicine, allied health, engineering, social work, nursing, and
The Health and Function Research Scientist will be
responsible for leading a research program that develops, refines
and evaluates new diagnostic tools and/or therapy interventions
focused on enhancing the health and function outcomes of persons
who sustain neurotrauma, with a focus on brain injuries. Research
program areas of interest include but are not limited to precision
medicine rehabilitation approaches, mobile health, behavioral
informatics, bioinformatics, learning health systems, integrative
medicine, neurodegeneration, regenerative rehabilitation medicine,
applied robotics, brain-computer interfaces, virtual reality, and
other assistive technologies. A key aspect of the position is
securing funding to sustain the research program. Dual department
appointments are available as needed.
The position requires: (1) a medical or doctoral degree in
rehabilitation, nursing, engineering, allied health professions,
psychology, internal medicine, neurology, or other related field;
(2) a minimum of three years of independent programmatic, published
research; and (3) a track record of successful federal grant
funding, with NIH grant funding preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen
or work eligible, ability to work in a team environment is
essential. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a
diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do
so as a faculty member at VCU.
