Cobham's Integrated Space Solutions (ISS), located in LongIsland, NY, is a leading supplier of products for space applicationsincluding motors, actuators, mechanisms and controllers. ISSprovides space-rated solutions to all of the prime suppliers as wellas NASA organizations and space customers abroad.
Cobham is seeking a Principal Project Engineer to design, develop,and test all aspects of complex and precise mechanical andelectro-mechanical components and mechanisms for extremeenvironments such as space. This Principal Project Engineerwill apply strong knowledge of engineering principles to designproducts such as motors, actuators, slip rings, instruments,controls, and mechanisms. The Principal Project Engineer musthave experience with design for manufacturability and assembly(DFMA), Design To Unit Cost (DTUC) and other Lean design andmanufacturing principles. The position holder may be involved infabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair ofmechanical and electro-mechanical products.
This position reports to and works closely with the Chief Engineerand provides guidance and direction to a team of engineers,mechanical designers, assemblers, and technicians as well as workingindividually on certain projects. The Principal ProjectEngineer must effectively interface with peers, other departments,suppliers, and customers as needed to support successful executionof projects and company objectives in a timely manner. A widerange of creativity and self-direction is expected.
Lead Design & Development Projects. Responsible forachievement of technical, schedule, and cost requirements.Direct and supervise the work of other engineers, designers, andsupport personnel as assigned. Take ownership and responsibilityfor the product design through the entire product life cycle.Conduct Product Design & Development. Interpret systemspecifications and reduce to mechanical and electro-mechanicaldesign requirements. Create conceptual designs, assess risks,conduct design trade studies, and develop cost effective andreliable designs that meet the program requirements, includingdemanding space environmental requirements.Perform Planning and Reporting. Formulate a design plan orwork from technical objectives and overall schedules asspecified by senior project staff. As Principal ProjectEngineer, responsible for achievement of schedule, fiscal andperformance objectives on large to moderate size projects.Report technical and schedule progress at program reviews andinternal/customer design reviews as required. Coordinate workactivities with other groups.Perform Trade Studies. Solve problems requiring a broadknowledge of thermal, structural, and/or aerodynamic principles.Develop comprehensive trade-studies and technical presentationsthat are reviewed by both senior program staff and externalcustomers.Direct Fabrication and Test of Hardware. Develop test plansand test procedures and direct the fabrication of fixtures,prototypes, and flight hardware. Conduct or direct sub-systemand product-level mechanical and electro-mechanical testing tovalidate compliance to system requirements. Ensuremanufacturability and reliability of designs.Assure Complete Product Life Cycle Documentation. Performdocumentation of the design with the support of design/draftingand manufacturing engineering. Conduct tolerance stack-upanalyses and assure that tolerancing is documented correctly.Write or contribute to travellers and other work instructions asrequired. Participate in Root Cause Corrective Actioninvestigations and document analyses and findings forpresentations to internal and customer Failure Review Boards.Assure that corrective actions are properly implemented.Incorporate continuous improvements during product life cycle. Support Proposal Development. Participate in the preparationof technical proposals. Use experience to baseline conceptualdesigns during the proposal effort.Perform Other Duties. Assignments may include research anddevelopment of new techniques and materials as a result ofindependent study. Perform other duties and acceptresponsibilities as required.Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, SystemsEngineering or other related technical degreeDirect involvement in space or aerospace, military orautomotive related engineering activitiesMinimum of ten (10) years' work experience in the designof mechanical and/or electro-mechanical productsMust be familiar with motion control concepts, practices, andproceduresMust have extensive knowledge of materials, manufacturing, andtesting practices and processesStrong proficiency in PTC CREO, Solidworks or similar CADplatformsExperience with preparing and presenting technical reports anddesign reviews requiredExperience with Microsoft Office tools requiredPreferred Requirements:
Master's Degree in Engineering or Physics preferredPrior experience with PTC CREO Simulate, ANSYS, and/or NASTRANFinite Element Analysis tools is preferredExperience participating in proposal generation preferredExperience interfacing directly with customers preferredSecurity:
