Job Summary /Purpose:

This job isresponsible for providing nursing care and support to patients under thedirection of a Registered Nurse (RN) in a defined care team and in accordancewith assigned tasks and permitted by the Nursing Skills Checklist, with theexception of administering medication. An incumbent assumesresponsibility for their own actions taking into consideration clinicalexperience/education preparation, while being an active student in anaccredited nursing program. A school-signed copy of the incumbent s NursingSkills Checklist is kept on file and updated regularly.

Tasks are assignedby nursing staff in clear, detailed and specific instructions. Employeeswork as instructed and seek guidance on matters not specifically covered in theoriginal instructions. Work is reviewed through progress checks foraccuracy, adequacy and adherence to standards, instructions and establishedprocedures.

Key JobResponsibilities:
  • Provides patient personal care/hygiene and physical comfort withinassigned tasks and permitted by Nursing Skills Checklist, including feeding,bathing, shaving, changing clothes, bed making, ambulation, lifting, turning,moving, transferring, enemas, skin care and bowel/bladder elimination.Provides such additional care as required to meet the personal primary needsand comfort of assigned patient based on skill, ability, and patientacuity. Prepares patient, equipment and supplies for specificprocedures/examinations.
  • Performs, monitors, reports and documents all clinical activitieswithin assigned tasks and permitted by Nursing Skills Checklis
  • Observes and reports changes in patient condition to the RN.Obtains, labels and transports a variety of samples (e.g. urine, stool, sputumspecimens and blood products).
  • Assists nursing staff in the admission, discharge and transfer ofpatient by performing activities such as inventory/storing patient belongings,providing patient with relevant personal care/comfort items, orientingpatient/family and transporting patient to room or other location usingwheelchairs, stretchers or patient bed.
  • Provides patient information to nursing staff for inclusion in theinterdisciplinary plan of care; documents relevant patient data in accordancewith work unit standards.
  • Maintains a neat and organized work environment. Orders,stocks and replenishes supplies and equipment as necessary, identifies andreports problems with supplies or equipment; enters equipment repair request insystem, tags equipment and removes from service.
  • Maintains a safe work and patient environment, adhering to thehospital s Safety, Risk Management, Regulatory Standards and infectionprevention.
  • Participates in quality assurance/improvement initiatives andactivities. Participates in growth opportunities.

Required Education:
Current enrollmentas a Junior or Senior in an accredited Registered Nurse, Bachelor of ScienceDegree program or final year in a Registered Nurse, Associate Degree program.

Required Licensureand Certifications:
Must be registeredas a Nurse Aide in the state of practice.
Current healthcareprovider BLS certification.
Acceptablecredentialing bodies through the American Heart Association: Basic LifeSupport for Healthcare Providers.

Required MinimumKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic patient care practices (including BLS),standards and tools/equipment.
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality/safety guidelines and properbody mechanics as applied to patient movement and transport.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family andco-workers.
  • Ability to use proper body mechanics, proper posture, andappropriate repetition relief and static posture relief maneuvers.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in an efficient,accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to use effective customer service skills with bothinternal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, understand and communicate in English sufficientto perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to use office equipment and automatedsystems/applications/software at an acceptable level.
