Job Title: Schools Finance Manager

Location: South West London

Salary: £45K to £55K

Type: Permanent


25 days holiday during school holidays

Free school dinners

Pension (5% contribution up to 13.5%)


The Finance Manager is responsible for all financial and accounting matters within the school.

Reporting to the Finance Director they will lead the finance team to ensure the effective management and development of the school’s financial resources.

Key Responsibilities

General Financial Management

·Support the strategic decision making of the Finance Director, Heads & Principals through providing accurate and timely financial analysis, reports and forward planning

·Evaluate information and consult with the Finance Director to produce an annual budget for approval by the Principals

·Monitor and report upon budget against actual variances on a monthly basis.

·In conjunction with the Finance Director, investigate and promote ways of improving financial efficiency within the School, including introduction of improvements to the accounting software

and technology

·Monitor the financial controls of the School and introduce further controls as deemed necessary to safeguard the School’s assets and funds

·Negotiate and supervise the financial monitoring of all contracts, leases and relationships with external contractors

·Liaise with external auditors on all matters connected with the annual audit

·Support non-finance managers to better understand the budgeting and financial management processes within the school.

Management of the fee ledger

·To have accountability for the billing ledger ensuring that it is maintained in good order, ensuring that all transactions are appropriately recorded.

·Ensure that billing information is sent in a timely and appropriate manner

·Communicate with current and future parents re fee payments, responding to queries as appropriate.

·Ensure that processes to manage the end of the school year activity are in place and adhered to

·Joiners and leavers are processed in accordance with guidelines and their deposits refunded

·Production of aged debtors’ analysis in line with procedures and monitoring of the aged debtor list throughout the term

·Ensure that processes for the payment for outstanding school fees are in place and adhered to

·Process the renewal of all school fees insurances

Management of the nominal ledger

·Maintain the nominal Ledger in an orderly way, ensuring data entry is consistent and accurate

·Prepare (in consultation with the Finance Director) the annual budgets and termly forecasts, preparing and maintaining spread sheets for budget preparation and revision, including cashflow projections for the current and future years

·Prepare the termly management information reports of the previous term in a timely manner

·Monitor the suspense account and ensure its balance is nil at each term end

·Prepare monthly reconciliation of the control accounts in the nominal ledger

·Manage the preparation of cash flow statements and bank reconciliations

·Oversee the process of BACS payments and transfers between School accounts online

·In liaison with the Finance Director, prepare the statutory accounts for the Schools.

Finance Team Management

·Responsible for overseeing the work of the Finance team.

·In liaison with the Finance Director, responsible for developing, motivating and appraising staff for which responsible, ensuring high performance standards are achieved and maintained

General responsibilities

·Take responsibility for own development and support the development of others through the delivery of constructive feedback and a culture of continuous development

·Comply with applicable professional ethical guidance and all relevant internal rules, policy and procedures, including those relating to health and safety, data protection, IT security and all those contained within the issued staff manuals.

·Undertake other duties and tasks that from time to time may be required and that are

appropriate to the role.


·Experience of working in a finance or accountancy environment

·Experience of Purchase Ledger, Nominal Ledger, Sales Ledger, Bank Reconciliations and Payment Portals

·Experienced in the production of financial statements, cash flow forecasts and management accounts

·Experience of accounting for VAT and preparing and submitting VAT returns

·Experience of line management of finance staff

·Advanced PC skills, especially Excel


·Experience of working in a school or educational environment

·Experience of implementing new systems

· Qualified Accountant (ACMA, ACA, ACCA)
