The Role

The Design Engineer will operate in the Technical Team, within the Bids and Technical Department, and will report to the Technical Manager. The principal responsibility of the team is to ensure the quality of technical and costing input during the bidding of a sales opportunity and the smooth transition from Prospect into Operational Delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide an initial assessment of the technical content and feasibility of prospects to assist the Technical Design Lead/Technical Manager and others in the Bid/No Bid process.

* Undertake site surveys, in association with sub-contractors (if necessary); to this end it is essential that you have a good knowledge of a wide range of security system solutions and an understanding of associated disciplines including general electrical installation and civil works.

* Prepare system designs to the specification/requirement that is both technically and commercially advantageous to QSG providing justifications for any non-compliances.

* Prepare supporting information including but not limited to schematic drawings, architectural drawings, gantt charts, risk registers as are required.

* Prepare, in accordance with the tender documentation and the proposed design, any necessary specifications and drawings for subcontractors and equipment suppliers to bid against.

* Liaise closely with the Procurement Department to enable costings to be sought from suppliers and sub-contractors for the equipment and services required.

* Assess the costs, quotations, and responses returned by the Procurement Department ensuring a complete understanding of the equipment proposed, the scope and terms and conditions of supply.

* Assemble the costing spreadsheet ensuring that it aligns with the requirements of the tender or enquiry to ensure efficient document production.

* Prepare technical design and solution summaries for inclusion in QSG’s written tender return/proposal.

* Ensure that we capture all project/technical risks as part of the design process.

* Liaise with the Bid Team as necessary to assist in the successful preparation and publication of the final bid document.

* Support the Sales Team in client meetings and visits/presentations to both fully understand the opportunity, facilitate successful order conversion and provide technical support and guidance.

Experience and Qualifications Required

Essential

Candidates will likely to be Systems Design Engineers with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Security Industry. They will have a high-level of competence in the design of Electronic Securit systems.

Have a good understanding of the UK security industry e.g. products, market dynamics and competition and also of IP-based networks and particularly how they are deployed in security solutions.

Have a good understanding of the UK security industry e.g. products, market dynamics and competition and also of IP-based networks and particularly how they are deployed in security solutions.

A detailed understanding of the following:

CCTV (Analogue and IP)

Access Control

Intruder Detection

Integrated Security Management Systems (including PSIM)

A general understanding of electrical installations and civil works to support security infrastructure.

Team player with a positive, flexible, can-do attitude and the ability to work well under pressure.

Self-motivated with a proactive approach.

The ability to assimilate new technical concepts and product information quickly, sufficient to effectively explain it to others.

Good customer facing skills.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Experience of using Microsoft packages (Visio, Excel, Word) to intermediate or advanced level.

Desirable

Analogue signaling protocols, their uses and limitations including RS232, RS422 and RS485.

An understanding of IP networking concepts including the role of hubs, switches, routers and the 7 layer OSI model.

An understanding of wide area networking technologies including VPNs, ADSL, DSL, leased lines and contention.

Experience of designing wireless IP systems including point to point, point to multi-point and mesh.

Experience of estimating electrical, mechanical and civil works.

Experience of working with CCTV partners e.g. Synectics, Bosch, Pelco, Axis and Tyco.

Experience of working with Intruder and Access partners e.g. C-Cure, Grosvenor, Paxton, Honeywell (Galaxy).

Experience of video analytics/video content analysis and ANPR.

Experience of Autocad.

Good attention to detail with the ability to create well-presented proposal documentation.
