Health & Safety Manager

Based York

You will be a Senior SHESQ representative within one of our Alliance partnerships, looking after rail, and a key member of the team for all matters related to Safety, Health, Environment, Sustainability and Quality within the Joint Venture (JV).

The role:

The Health & Safety (H&S) Manager role is a critical role for the project and sits within the HSQES Function. Safety is our number one priority and the role is responsible for the effective delivery of Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental and Sustainability practice for the East of Leeds route upgrade. The role will cover H&S governance and provide professional proactive management as well as overseeing the safety training, coaching, mentoring and education of the project teams.

Responsibilities:

* Oversee the day to day delivery of H&S best practice and established accident & incident prevention strategies throughout the managerial/supervisory/workforce levels

* Work with the managerial/supervisory teams within the project in the implementation of H&S standards and procedures necessary to ensure compliance with QUENSH requirements, ISO standards, current applicable legislation and other client requirements

* Undertake regular H&S inspections to monitor compliance of the above standards and statutory requirements during the delivery of the project

* Provide professional H&S advice, coaching, mentoring, training and education to management/supervisors/workforce and contractors where identified as necessary

* Ensure H&S coordination of activities during planning of works by attending project specific progress review and construction meetings

* In conjunction with the managerial team carry out formal accident & incident investigations and identify recommendations and remedial actions arising as a result and ensure they are implemented

* Deliver H&S initiatives as directed by the HSQES Lead

* Review and provide professional safety advice in the production of Method Statements, SSIs, risk assessments, work instructions, etc

* Attend client meeting and safety forums as directed by the HSQES Lead

* Drive safety values and behaviours putting safety at the core and forefront of what you do, supporting the Alliance culture in all aspects of the programme

* Carry out 'on-call duties' in line with project requirements

* Assist the Alliance safety leadership in achieving a zero harm, everyone home safe everyday vision, in an environment of learning and continuous improvement

Qualifications and experience:

* Previous experience in an H&S role with a principal contractor

* Rail construction industry experience

* CDM 2015 knowledge

* Ideally have working knowledge of both rail and civil engineering interfaces and practices

* NEBOSH General Certificate

* Accident investigation training

* Knowledge of OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001

* Self-motivated with the ability to prioritise and manage a diverse workload

* Initiative and proactivity, along with technical and professional expertise

* Personal resilience and ability to respond positively to pressure

* Personal and professional credibility

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
