Principal Automation Engineer

Gartner is looking for a well-rounded DevOps Automation Engineer who is well versed in cloud native development techniques and best practices including serverless and related technologies. The ideal candidate will be someone who has a true DevOps delivery mindset, is highly technical, and has demonstrable experience innovating with Configuration Management/Orchestration technologies to increase business velocity.


Provide leadership in DevOps and Infrastructure-as-code methodologies and techniques including configuration management and immutable infrastructure

Collaborate with DevOps engineers to design and build secure automation solutions focused on self-service enablement

Consult & advise the engineering teams on cloud infrastructure and cloud development best practices for current and future development

Lead deployment of reusable patterns and deployment pipelines, creation of design collateral, and oversee infrastructure implementations

Coordinate with engineering teams to rapidly build infrastructure and application pipelines in service of business needs while also supporting the needs of Security and Performance Mgt teams

Collaborate with a cross-functional team of application developers, operations engineers, architects to understand complex product requirements and translate them into automated solutions

Have a customer-based mindset in designing, creating, and operating technical solutions, improve existing architecture, systems, processes, standards and tools

Lead architectural discussions to ensure solutions are designed for successful deployment, security, and high availability in the cloud

Provide architectural input for system design to improve scalability, reliability, and availability of applications

Investigate and recommend best practices for maintaining code quality, including the development of code metrics, code review workflows, code coverage measurement and the efficient use of static and dynamic analysis

Troubleshoot and solve customer issues on production cloud infrastructure

Be part of the on-call team for addressing issues on production infrastructure

Evangelize cloud native development practices and a true DevOps culture to help increase Gartner's business velocity

Experience Required:

MS or BS degree in computer science or related focus and equivalent work experience

7+ years of experience in Software and/or Infrastructure, with a desired 3+ years in a relevant cloud, automation, and orchestration

Strong experience in automating Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and Agile practices for a highly scalable systems

Perform analysis of the current practices and design and implement best practices and emerging concepts in CI/CD landscape

Proven ability to write clear and concise technical documents, including design documents, specifications and technology roadmaps

Must have implemented DevSecOps practices/tools in areas such as continuous integration, environment automation, release automation, virtualization, infrastructure as a code

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain code repositories with Git

Ability to design continuous integration and continuous deployment environments using tools such as Jenkins, BitBucket, Artifactory, SonarQube

Ability to document and train on CI/CD best practices

Individuals in this role are responsible for designing, integrating, and maintaining DevSecOps continuous test/integration/deployment and operational platforms.

Knowledge or experience of Jenkins automation server and continuous delivery based on DevSecOps practices.

Proven experience building and operating with event-driven architectures

Proven experience developing, testing, deploying and operating serverless applications

Experience designing, configuring and securing Restful microservices through AWS API Gateway.

Experience with related serverless technologies including SQS, SNS, Step Functions, Cognito

Experience with Docker, Microservices and container deployment and service orchestration

Experience with Canary and Blue-Green Deployment mechanisms to reduce downtime and risk, provide continuous deployment and fast rollback

Strong analytical, collaboration, leadership, critical thinking, multitasking, and time management skills

Strong knowledge of Amazon AWS and Azure and their API's

Hands-on experience building complex, scalable, and high-performance software architectures, in AWS and Azure

Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration

Proven experience with Configuration Management/Orchestration Tools such as Jenkins, Ansible, Packer, Microsoft Desired State Config, CodeDeploy

Proven experience with Infrastructure Provisioning tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM

Strong programming background with Python, groovy, bash, Java, Powershell along with associated configuration formats such as JSON & YAML

Solid Build Tool experience: Jenkins, Artifactory, Git

Familiarity w/Monitoring & alerting systems (Cloudwatch, DataDog, Dynatrace, New Relic)

Experience with Secrets Management tools such as HashiCorp Vault

Experience with container technologies such as Docker, EKS, ECS, AKS

Experience with security standards and best practices

Experience with AWS security and infrastructure best practices
