The Editorial Director works within the Brand + Communications team at Conservation International and provides consistent, high-quality, strategically aligned messaging for a variety of communications channels and products. The editorial director is responsible for upholding the style, tone and voice for the organization.
This position requires deep conceptual understanding of CI's mission and messaging as well as the flexibility, creativity and ingenuity to operate under high-stress, high-stakes and high-visibility circumstances. The ED is responsible for helping to set and manage CIs message and tone of voice, and ensuring consistent, accurate and compelling editorial content.
The Editorial Director manages the blog editor, but also provides editorial oversight and input to other staff in B+C, Development and elsewhere.
This position is based on Arlington, VA; some travel may be required.
Lead writing, editing and proofing of a wide range of materials including CI web site, print materials, emails to CI community and more. Ensure all content is accurate, compelling, branded and on-message.
Liaise with program staff to stay abreast of CI initiatives and programmatic work. Research and share compelling content and story ideas to support all marketing and communications efforts.
Serve as communications point person for various external partnerships, as needed.
Maintain editorial tone through formal and informal channels. Help set editorial direction, including editorial calendar.
Manage blog editor. Assign projects and oversee work to ensure accurate, compelling, on-brand content.

Normal office environment.
Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of relevant experience.
Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills.
Ability to convey complex, technical content in clear, concise, compelling language.
Ability to plan and execute outstanding editorial content on deadline.
Experience directing writers.
Strong interpersonal skills; possessing cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects while maintaining clarity of focus and flexibility in the face of organizational change and ambiguity.
Commitment to working in a team environment with shared goals; sound judgment and integrity; willingness to try new approaches; and dedication to the mission and objectives
International travel work experience.
Familiarity with news-style writing and AP style.
Familiarity with writing for email marketing and fundraising.
