Executive Director, Drug Metabolism
Specific Responsibilities and skills for Position:
We are seeking an experienced, creative, and highly motivated DMPK expert with industry research experience focused on lead optimization, IND preparation, and nonclinical drug development for a wide variety of modalities including small molecules and complex biologics. In addition to overseeing a group of professionals, this position will be responsible for leading DMPK interactions with medicinal chemists, biologists, and toxicologists to facilitate the successful achievement of lead optimization and efficient progression of drug candidates in nonclinical development.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
- Supervise and mentor a group of DMPK scientists supporting multiple drug discovery programs.
- Provide scientific guidance on lead optimization programs and work in close collaboration with discovery teams to optimize the DMPK properties of candidate drugs, including biologics.
- Provide non-clinical support for drug candidates in development programs.
- Develop and maintain close interactions with research and development groups
- Effectively communicate science and strategy across Gilead R&D.
- Identify and support external collaborations and evaluate business development opportunities.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline and a minimum of 15 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in DMPK. The candidate should have exceptional knowledge and skill in ADME and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics as demonstrated through a strong publication record indicative of an in-depth understanding of the experimental methodologies and approaches, including in vitro and in vivo, utilized in lead optimization.
The candidate should have exceptional knowledge of metabolic routes of biotransformation, metabolite identification, and drug-drug interactions involving drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters. The candidate must be able to work with multiple disciplines in drug discovery and provide exceptional guidance and innovative approaches to lead optimization teams in the discovery of novel drug candidates. The candidate should have extensive knowledge in nonclinical drug development and toxicokinetics, as well as the preparation of regulatory documents, eg INDs and NDAs. The candidate should also have extensive experience in the extrapolation of human pharmacokinetic parameters from nonclinical data and strong working knowledge in PK/PD modeling in order to interact effectively with clinical development programs. In addition, she/he should be a goal-oriented and effective leader. Additional requirements include effective mentoring of scientific staff and highly effective managerial, organizational, and communication skills.
