Principal Scientist - Protein Technologies

Amgen's Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative Principal Scientist team to lead membrane protein efforts in the Protein Technologies group at our Amgen South San Francisco site. Protein Technologies is responsible for designing, planning and executing on the generation of key enabling DNA and protein reagents to support discovery of small and large molecule therapeutics and cutting-edge novel modalities.
As a team lead within Protein Technologies, you will be responsible for recruiting and managing a high-performing team producing complex membrane proteins to support the Amgen pipeline. You will be responsible for the scientific, strategic and operational management of the group, and will also actively participate in the science through hands-on lab work as well as exploring and implementing enabling technologies. You will be responsible for initiating and driving collaborations with partner functions such as Antibody Discovery, Discovery Technologies, Molecular Structure and the Research Biology organization.
Well-qualified applicants will have a strong scientific background in membrane protein expression, purification, formulation and analytics, and an interest in technology development in this field. They will have demonstrated success in project and personnel management, and be adept at working cross-functionally.

The Principal Scientist we seek possesses these qualifications:
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline and 3 years of industry experience
Ph. D. and postdoc from a leading institution or biotechnology company with 5+ years of related industry experience
Deep expertise in membrane protein expression, protein biochemistry, formulation, biophysics and analytics, as evidenced with a track record of innovative strategies towards production of membrane proteins
Structural biology experience in membrane proteins is a strong plus, as is expertise in other difficult protein classes
Project leadership in biologics drug development as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, patents, or pipeline contributions
3+ years of managing a high-performing team in industry with a focus on protein/membrane protein expression, biochemistry, biophysics and analytics.
Ability to inspire and grow a high-performing team, chart and set team goals into action, prioritize a range of activities and projects, and forge productive cross-site collaborations with partner functions
Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to articulate goals, objectives and results to both the group and to cross-functional teams
