The Director, Astellas Gene Therapy Communications, leads all communications activities for Astellas' Gene Therapy Center of Excellence (COE). The role is responsible for building and protecting the Astellas Gene Therapies brand as a leading innovation center within Astellas. The role is accountable on a day-to-day basis to the Gene Therapy Center of Excellence Leadership team and reports into the Astellas Corporate Advocacy & Relations team.
The role works independently to build and execute the communications strategy for the COE using media relations, digital and social media, executive thought leadership, events and sponsorships, employee engagement and community advocacy/social responsibility activities to engage with key external and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate is able to operate proactively and quickly within a complex Matrix environment across multiple business units, locations, cultures and time zones, engaging with multiple stakeholders. The candidate also has excellent executive presence and is able to think strategically and execute independently under pressure.
This role will ideally be based in our San Francisco Office. We will consider remotely-based candidates.


Primary Responsibilities


Develops and delivers an annual communication plan that understands stakeholder needs and uses a mix of communications activities to address those needs in support of Astellas' Gene Therapy COE goals. Such activities include:
Employee engagement through creation of a comprehensive employee communications plan including executive communications, Town Halls, BOLD Talks, employee events, management of intranet, etc.
Internal communications strategy to embed the culture, vision and mission of the COE; Leads Culture Committee and Employee Task Forces
Create and maintain a favorable public image for the COE by communicating programs, accomplishments and/or points of view externally
Development, review and ownership of key messages, Q&As and talking points for internal and external use on COE scientific and manufacturing platform and research and development programs
Executive thought leadership and general message development to highlight COE leadership team, scientific platform and key programs
Pre-launch and launch/product communications support for marketing/commercial such as disease awareness and cost/value strategy and message development
Proactive and reactive media relations - fielding media questions and pitching stories to the media, preparing media materials and organizing press conferences
Maintains website and/or web content on Astellas' website, social media and other digital content development
Crisis management preparedness and response
Defines and establishes communications policies, procedures and protocols for working within Astellas communications
Manages external agency/vendor relationships
Measures and reports on communications activities and impact
Manages annual budget including vendor invoicing and expenses
Manages social and media monitoring and analysis


About you


Must Have/Required


Bachelor's degree with 15+ years' communications or public relations experience in the biopharma or life sciences industry
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and confidently at the C-suite level
Highly self-motivated with a proactive mindset and able to effectively plan and project manage multiple communications initiatives simultaneously
Outstanding written, verbal communication and presentation skills with proven ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear corporate messages, particularly in written materials
Outstanding collaborative skills with proven success negotiating with and influencing external and internal groups, including contributing to and leading cross functional and Matrix teams across multiple disciplines, cultures and time zones
Solid understanding and ability to execute on digital and social media channels
Strong interpersonal influence and active listening skills, flexible team player with the highest ethical and business standards
Ability to manage large-scale program budgets and multiple agencies
Ability to frequently attend early morning or late-night teleconference meetings
Ability to travel up to 15% domestic and international
Strong computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

May Have/Preferred


Experience with rare diseases, neuromuscular diseases and/or gene therapy products
Advanced scientific degree (PharmD, MD, or PhD)
Experience working in a heavily regulated industry
