The Johnson & Johnson Innovation Centers, a part of Johnson & Johnsons Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Director, Early Innovation Partnering to be based in South San Francisco, CA. The candidate will work across a Matrix organization serving as a member of the Early Innovation Partnering team at the CAIC, responsible for sourcing activities, search and evaluation of opportunities and progressing opportunities into partnerships, reporting to the Head, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, West North America, Australia & New Zealand. The candidate's responsibilities will focus primarily on external innovation opportunities for the following therapeutic areas within Janssen Pharmaceuticals: highly desired with experience in Cardiovascular/Metabolism, Neuroscience, Infectious Diseases and Vaccines and Discovery Technologies and Platform Innovations. Additional experience in ophthalmic diseases, particularly retinal diseases, is highly desired.

Broad Function of Role

An externally-focused, highly entrepreneurial deal-making and leadership role aimed at identifying and on-boarding potentially transformational innovation into Johnson & Johnson.

Even in the absence of direct reports, this role is primarily a leadership role, the successful candidate expected to shape the direction of innovation and deal-making for their respective Johnson & Johnson businesses.

Early Innovation Partnering

This role reports to the Head, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, West North America, Australia and New Zealand and is an integral member of the CAIC team. This team is responsible for engaging with the external innovation community across all components of the innovation hubs in our region including academia, venture capital, and the start-up community and work with internal teams to progress opportunities from identification through diligence and development of R&D statement of work. The candidate will be responsible for the proactive sourcing, identification and evaluation of external innovations of potentially high interest to J&J's operating companies based on J&J's defined strategies, in strategic adjacencies and in new areas. For opportunities that continue to be of high interest after due diligence, the candidate will be a member of the deal team, either as a lead or participant, in collaboration with scientific, finance, legal functions (and in some cases venture capital investors) to identify the optimal partnership deal structure and then progress the deal through to deal closure. In some cases, the team also contributes to the management and optimization of partnerships after deal execution.

Key Responsibilities

Develop deep understanding of innovation and scientific landscape in relevant therapeutic areas of interest and developing methods to systematically identify innovative opportunities and to maximise chances of serendipitous discovery of opportunities.

Drive and coordinate global landscapes and competitive landscapes related to specific opportunities in collaboration with the other Innovation Centers.

Apply scientific expertise to evaluate and support diligence on relevant external opportunities in collaboration with the Therapeutic Area leads, including regional proactive sourcing activities and global landscaping efforts.

Identify highly innovative asset-centric and platform opportunities, lead and manage cross-functional due diligence team, shape and prepare the operative R&D workplans, and devise and propose collaboration models, transaction structures and terms that are commercially and scientifically appropriate.

Take accountability for ensuring that opportunities progressing through appropriate review processes, that key risks are identified, communicated appropriately and debated sufficiently, and mitigation strategies are accounted for in deal structures, development plans and cost projections.

Build business cases that are rigorous and based on sound commercial, scientific, regulatory and clinical rationale, with key assumptions and risks clearly articulated.

Preparation of internal review and briefing documents including substantial quantitative and qualitative analysis of opportunities.

Lead, or participate, in the negotiation and closing of transactions.

External presentation of J&J to prospective partners and regular attendance at industry events such as scientific, clinical and partnering conferences.

Ensuring that all interactions and engagements are carried out with the highest ethical and professional standards and that all work is accomplished with quality and in accordance with J&J Credo.

Key Relationships

Internal - Building close relationships within CAIC and with relevant leaders and stakeholders within respective J&J businesses and wide J&J functional representatives. This is to both understand/contribute to strategy/requirements and to develop sufficient influence in order to be able to champion new opportunities, including those that are potentially off strategy but where a compelling business case can be made.

External -Building and maintaining close relationships with appropriate external sources of innovation, including entrepreneurs, academics, key opinion leaders, biotech companies, venture capitalists, non-profit organizations, etc.


Education, Experience and Qualifications

Deep experience and understanding of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, with minimum of 6 years real world career experience in fast-paced, dynamic environment within science-based healthcare business is required.

Ability to demonstrate an extensive personal network including senior decision-makers and leaders in fields relevant to role is required.

Advanced life sciences PhD or MDs with strong scientific and business mind-set and credentials is required.

Business development or start-up experience in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology or medical devices is preferred (Experience in an investment bank, life sciences venture capital or a top tier strategy management consultancy may also be relevant).

Able to demonstrate previous deal-sourcing and transaction success (licensing and collaboration deals sourced/identified that were subsequently successfully executed) including evidence of substantial involvement in driving/championing/leading the opportunity evaluation and negotiation through to a successful outcome in a cross-functional environment and the ability to help build understanding and consensus in support of a transaction at all levels in an organization is required.

A strong inclination to working in multi-disciplinary teams and leading others without formal authority.
