As the Sr. Director of Research and Development you'll be tasked with leading the teams that are taking us to the next level in Product Design and Development, Innovation, Engineering, and Sustainability, providing overall leadership and management of activities associated with all functional engineering and design disciplines employed to support the CamelBak Product Lines. As a member of the Sr. Leadership Team, you will work cross functionally with all CamelBak departments to meet and exceed the company's expectations. This is a key position to the overall growth and development of the CamelBak Product business.

Major Responsibilities:


Innovation


Effectively lead the ideation, development, and implementation of new technologies, materials, and functionality in support of overall product and brand strategies
Work collaboratively with Product Management to develop proper research and consumer insights protocols to help guide the design and development of new products and technologies
Where appropriate identify and establish partnership with select technology providers and existing suppliers to complement internal development of product design and technologies.
Lead the valuation and protection of intellectual properties. Partner with corporate legal services to actively manage the CamelBak IP portfolio


Vision/Leadership


Align CamelBak's Product Engineering/Design organization with the company's forward-looking business model, optimizing headcount and resources making changes where necessary.
Drive standards and processes across the Company to improve delivery methodologies across various business lines
Champion a team environment amongst different disciplines and locations to meet project goals
Foster individual ownership of project tasks/delivery to ensure project success
Identify and mitigate potential risks while proactively seeking new opportunities


Product Development Leadership


Lead the Product Development team ensuring the proper execution of existing Phase Gate development processes.
Plan, develop and implement team initiatives, metrics and goals with an eye towards improved speed to market and design acceptance.
Formulate research and product development projects with a focus on innovation, quality, safety, effectiveness and profitability
Plan, prioritize, and budget all Product Development-related activities in support of the annual business plan
Work collaboratively with Product Management and Sales to develop new product plans and strategies
Work with Operations, Manufacturing and QA to ensure new products are of the highest quality and readily manufacturable
Ensures projects progress against the product roadmap and launch timing by managing diverse project teams throughout the entire project lifecycle


Product Function and Design


Lead the Industrial Design team to formulate and evolve the overall design vision for the CamelBak brand. Driving consistency and a clear design language in support of overall product and brand strategies.
Work closely with Product Management to translate research based criteria into continuous flow of superior new products and revisions of existing products that meet well defined consumer needs.


Management


Ensure that the Product Development team achieves annual operating plan goals and budget targets
Establish and manage the Product Development budget
Ensure resource capacity through appropriate staffing level practices
Manage CamelBak's R & D team in prioritizing and executing strategic new product initiatives.
Drive complex projects to successful completion in a timely manner
Responsible for product engineering and design timelines
Perform advisory role in early stages of product development (DFM) transitioning to a leadership role in later implementation stages (design and engineering)
Comprehensive knowledge of all project areas to ensure project portfolio success


Degree/Certificates:


Bachelor's Degree in Applied Science, Engineering, Industrial Design or equivalent work experience
Master's Degree in related field preferred
Demonstrated history of achievement in multiple environments including Design and Product Development
Extensive knowledge and understanding of Product Development technologies and strategies
Working knowledge of applicable federal and state consumer product regulations


Job Experience:


10+ years related experience in research and development with minimum five (5) years in a Product Development management role
5 + years working with plastics
5+ years working in an environment with both hard and soft goods


Job Requirements:


Proven ability of engineering technical leadership
Prior budget responsibility in a senior leadership Engineering role
Strong communication skills with the ability to present/communicate at all levels within the Company, including to the Company Board and prospective customers
Applied experience managing a project portfolio including: budget and schedule parameters; key problem identification and problem resolution as necessary
Experience driving concepts from multiple points within the organization from genesis to completion
Experience with performance management processes and successful team development and leadership
Results oriented manager with a track record of achieving results in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated success as a facilitator of the product development process, finding solutions, creating efficiencies and removing roadblocks to adhere to or improve on time to market criteria.
Solid understanding of the manufacturing processes and materials used to create the products that CamelBak distributes.
Competent engineer with strong analytical skills
