The Director of Sustainability Strategy and Communications (North America, henceforth NA) heads up our sustainability advisory work across strategy, reporting and communications in that region, overseeing and driving our core sustainability consultancy work and NA team, partnering closely with our UK consulting team, client service functions, as well as design, production and new business.

The North America team offers strategic counsel, advice, insight and solutions across across multiple sectors and topics - with a current emphasis on reporting and strategy.

The role in detail:

An experienced and knowledgeable sustainability consulting Director who offers advice and counsel across the range of complex challenges our NA clients face and oversees the delivery of high quality work and deliverables. This person sits on the company management team and plays a central role in driving new business and marketing in North America as well as management of the NA team alongside the Group Client Director (North America).

Client management

Able to bring extensive and expert knowledge across a range of different corporate sustainability challenges, issues, trends and practices - and across a range of sectors.
Expertly able to apply knowledge, insight, and critical thinking to solve complex and high-profile client challenges across own portfolio of work
Capable of building strong and profitable client relationships at a senior-level as a trusted advisor
Able to understand the client mind-set and wider organisational priorities, culture and context and to use this to spot ways in which Salterbaxter can enhance and expand its support
Confident at facilitating workshops, leading meetings and engaging with senior client representatives
Expert in identifying, synthesizing and communicating client challenges and solutions (written and verbal)
Able to effectively oversee and work within project teams, consistently finding ways to get the best from others
Oversee overall quality of draft and final deliverables
Working closely and collaboratively with the client partnership function (led in NA by the Group Client Director), playing an active role in client development

Business Development

Lead on, contribute to and oversee new business development for North America
Develop and lead pitch responses, collaborating with colleagues to understand what the client will buy and delivering pitch outputs to a consistently high quality
Play a key role in opening up opportunities through profile building, networking, thought leadership and marketing
Actively evolving pitch processes and teams to help improve and/or maintain a high strike rate

Team and Business Leadership

- In conjunction with Group Client Director:
Hold weekly and monthly team meetings
Oversee weekly resourcing needs and long-term planning across the team - implement and oversee success of relevant processes and monitoring tools
Oversee and deliver NA team revenue and new business targets
Responsible for overall team leadership and development as well as line management of NA consultants - developing annual objectives, identifying training needs, providing ad-hoc support, and conducting and overseeing appraisals
In conjunction with Group Client Director and Account Managers, oversee the financial health of all accounts
As part of the management team, you will be responsible for agreeing wider cross-agency priorities across our offer, business development, revenue targets, people, client development and knowledge and skills building
Contribute to all other agency management needs and demonstrate leadership at all levels


Previous experience:

Minimum of 7-10 years of sustainability consulting experience, with demonstrable exposure to large and complex consultancy projects - strategy, communications, or reporting
Demonstrable experience in the delivery of sustainability strategies and reporting projects is particularly important for this role
May bring a specialism in a particular sector or practice area but must demonstrate experience across a range of different sectors and practices
A formal qualification in a related sustainability field alongside agency/consultancy experience
Must have experience in meeting stretching financial targets across revenue, business development and profit margin
