Performs tasks associated with the preparation of human tissue for microscopic investigation and analysis by pathologist including sectioning, reagent and other treatment, slide placement, drying, and staining.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities
  • Accurately performs accessioning and other clerical functions when required with minimal errors.

  • Assist pathologist as required with cutting tissue, frozen sections, and autopsies.

  • Cut proper tissue sections and prepare appropriate slides for examination including routine staining, coverslipping, and labeling.

  • Perform cytochemical procedures for assessing cellular constituents (special stains, immunoperoxidase stains, etc.)

  • Maintain all required records, reports, logs, etc.

  • Ensures appropriate usage, storage, and disposal of all flammable, corrosive, or hazardous chemicals used in the department.

  • Ensures proper disposal of tissue samples following completion of appropriate retention period.

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the appropriate hospital and lab information systems for which the employee has access.

  • Complies with all policies regarding the operation and security of the laboratory's information system assets.

  • Delivers laboratory reports to nursing units, physicians, and other clients in an accurate, timely, and efficient manner.

  • Other duties as assigned by management.

  • Qualifications

    Required Education

    • High School Diploma or equivalent education plus apprenticeship training in Histotechnology

    Required Licensure and Certification

    • ASCP Histotechnician - Preferred but not required.
